Birdfeed, a challenger to the throne of iPhone Twitter clients currently held by Tweetie, might have the edge in some ways. It caches Tweets, so you can read your feeds even without wireless coverage, and looks super slick to boot.

The big draw is caching, but Birdfeed will also bookmark your place in a long feed so you can pop right back in later without having to scroll forever, as well as changing direct messages to a separate SMS-style section. We're sure some people will like and some people will dislike the latter feature, but we think it's a smart idea.

Birdfeed does cost more than Tweetie, at $5 to Tweetie's $3. It doesn't seem like much, but we imagine that could discourage a lot of potential buyers, since Tweetie is sort of the standard and of course works very well. Not only is it the worst Photoshop involving kids and a Star Wars-themed playpen that I've ever seen, it's also the worst slogan for one: "A wonderful soft play area that will really make you feel like you're riding in a tie fighter!" You're not going to believe this, but thieves are using Google Earth to locate unseen koi ponds that contain valuable carp specimens. That's right: Some people actually value those overgrown, muck-eating goldfish. It might have been a decent post if the snoops had been hunting for something a little more exciting, like used gardening equipment. "Iron Man Saves Film Extra From Rampaging Robot" was the headline that caught my eye, but it turned out to be a case of distinctly human error. Apparently, on the Iron Man 2 set, when Robert Downey Jr. yelled "Cut! Cut!" during a shoot, everybody looked around to see an unnamed extra lying on the ground where an evil iron dude had just landed. The extra broke his hip, but is apparently on the mend. AppleInsider says the next Nano and Classic iPods might get this crazy "multi-dimensional scroll wheel," spotted in a September Apple patent filing. As intriguing as it is, I see this more likely to appear virtually on a touch LCD or OLED. As a clickwheel, it seems like there'd be too many nonintuitive motions to remember. Besides, I can see how a swipe across the front could be used for quick iPod browsing, I don't see how "pinch" zooming will go over, no matter how big the next Nano's screen gets. [AppleInsider]

As someone with a proudly stupid ringtone ("Gonna Make You Sweat"), I'm okay with being embarrassed when it invariably goes off in public. But then, I'm not a White House reporter who interrupts the President with loud digital quacking.

As if Obama wasn't already the coolest guy this side of John Shaft, I love the way he reacts to the incredibly rude and thoughtless reporter's ridiculous ringtone. "Whose...whose duck is back there?" It's tough to tell without anything to scale this image, but the Cooler Master SNA 95 is the smallest 95W laptop adapter around—yet still manages to integrate some convenient extras.

Measuring just 2.9 x 0.7 x 5.7, the SNA 95 includes practicalities beyond its 9 bundled tips that are compatible with most major brands of laptops (though it doesn't appear that Macbooks are supported). The Cooler Master system also includes a cable management system, slick cool LED indicators and a USB port for whatever else might need charging.

Months after he explained to us why Pandora wasn't immediately jumping onto Android, CTO Tom Conrad reveals that Pandora is indeed coming to Android now that "the Android universe has developed nicely." [Tom Conrad via Phandroid]

John Carmack says that not one, but three Quake games are coming to the iPhone—1, 2, and Arena—though his involvement will mostly be to "make sure certain specific things are done the way I want them to be."

The Quake onslaught is in addition to a slew of other id games hitting iPhone: Wolfenstein RPG, Doom 2 RPG and Doom Classic. Interestingly, why he'll be farming out most of the port work, Carmack says he's personally interested in working on some of the stuff made possible by the iPhone 3GS's more advanced hardware: "I certainly want to do this MegaTexture demo for the 3GS stuff, work on that myself."

While there's 40 million current-gen iPhone OS devices out there, I'm totally ready for developers to ditch them so we can see what's really possible on the platform. [Shacknews]
