Make no mistake: The Zacuto Zgrip iPhone Pro is completely ridiculous. I mean, it's a $300 iPhone handgrip. But pro video shooters—should they be shooting iPhone 3GS video for some strange reason—will appreciate all the options.

Featuring a fully articulating head, the Zgrip has mounts for an optional LED fill light and higher quality stereo audio recorder. Even with these options, however, it's far too expensive given that there's no true image stabilization going on beyond an easier way to hold the iPhone. If this were a handheld steadicam (allowing you to recreate the Star Wars speeder bike chase), it might be tempting at $300. But as of right now it's really just a very, very nice holder.

Last.fm is coming to the Xbox 360, which is great. But you're gonna need a Gold Live membership to enjoy it, and even then you'll be stuck watching video ads.

Silver members will get a 3-month, ad-supported trial. Gold members get full access to the service, but they'll also be stuck watching ads. To fully escape advertisements, you'll need to subscribe, which will also bring some extra features that have yet to be detailed. And there's no word on how much it'll cost, but seeing as a regular Last.fm membership is $3 a month, it probably won't be very much.

As to whether or not you'll be able to play Last.fm station streams in-game, well, they still haven't clarified that for whatever reason. Or when exactly this will all happen. Eventually, one's got to assume, they'll give us all of the details. [Kotaku via Joystiq]

Sakhr is a translation company with big clients like the U.S. Department of Defense and Homeland Security. They specialize in English/Arabic translation, and this demo of their iPhone/Blackberry app (not publicly available) looks like the Holy Grail of translation software.

You hold a button, say a phrase and the software captures the information through speech recognition. The text is then translated into either Arabic or English (in the cloud, we believe) and then read aloud so mispronunciation is not an issue.

Of course, voice recognition is one of those fabled computer advancements that's parked in a perpetual spot "right around the corner," but if this app works even with 85% accuracy, that's close enough for most tourists—even if soldiers could find the mistakes a bit more costly.

After 18 years of operation, NASA has switched off Ulysses, the space probe designed to study the properties of solar wind, the heliosphere magnetic field, and the solar radio bursts that can greatly affect our gadgets, telecommunications, and every electronic system here on planet Earth. It was the first object to see and study our Sun's poles.

But Ulysses it's not dead yet, at least in spirit. If it gets lucky, it may depart to reach other stars: According to NASA, if it gets close enough to a Jovian moon, Ulysses will jump into a new course that will lead the brave probe into deep space. That certainly would be the perfect destination for a spacecraft that has provided with such an amazing amount of data about our home star. During the Firefox 3.5 beta, a few people stumbled upon a neat, unadvertised feature. By twisting their fingers on a Macbook's multitouch pad, they were able to roll through their loaded tabs. But Firefox 3.5 (official) deactivated the trick.

Luckily, as Crunchgear explains, the multitouch trick can be reactivated! You can read the very simple instructions over at their site, then realize that you can actually modify the settings to use gestures beyond the twist (like a three-finger swipe). Remember the disgusting video of some mysterious creature in the North Carolina sewers I posted yesterday? I cynically assumed it was a viral ad for some upcoming movie. Sweet merciful christ, I was wrong. These things are actually real.

The crew at DeepSeaNews.com sent the video over to Dr. Timothy S. Wood, an expert on freshwater bryozoa and an officer with the International Bryozoology Association (what fun parties they must have, eh?), and he had this to say about it:

Thanks for the video – I had not see it before. No, these are not bryozoans! They are clumps of annelid worms, almost certainly tubificids (Naididae, probably genus Tubifex). Normally these occur in soil and sediment, especially at the bottom and edges of polluted streams. In the photo they have apparently entered a pipeline somehow, and in the absence of soil they are coiling around each other. The contractions you see are the result of a single worm contracting and then stimulating all the others to do the same almost simultaneously, so it looks like a single big muscle contracting. Interesting video.

The Philips 56PFL9954H Cinema 21:9 uses the same aspect ratio of most movies out there, which means that it eliminates the black bars while watching a Blu-ray title. And while every single consumers electronics expert in the UK is raving about the amazing quality of this 8.3-million-pixel TV set, the Philips Cinema 21:9 still has to do zooming to make the movie to fill its 1080-pixel vertical resolution.
